In the first two weeks on sale, the PlayStation 5 has managed to outsell the launch numbers for its predecessor. This makes it not only the best PlayStation launch of all time, but also the biggest console launch in history.
This news was announced on Twitter by the official PlayStation account. It simply states that the console has outsold the PlayStation 4 at this same point in its life cycle. The exact numbers are still unknown at this point, though they should be shared by Sony soon.
PlayStation’s CEO at the time, Andrew House, announced in 2014 that the PlayStation 4 sold 2.1 million units in just over two weeks. At the time it was seen as a record-setting moment for the industry, as well as the company. Following this, a DFC Intelligence analyst declared that the console had seen the biggest launch in history to date.
This latest declaration from PlayStation heavily indicates that as of now, there is a new record-holder for the biggest console launch of all time.
The Twitter account wrote that the company thanked everyone who had made this possible. It went on to explain that demand for this console has been unprecedented. It also outlined how more PlayStation 5 stock would be with retailers before the end of 2020.
The PlayStation 5 launched across all major markets over November 12 and 19, 2020. Unfortunately for Sony, the pre-order launch and launch sales of the console have been marred by unavailability with most retailers. This was exacerbated by a lack of communication at the time from the platform manufacturer.
Sony has explained that they expect the PlayStation 5 to outperform the PlayStation 4 by the end of the current fiscal year. The PlayStation 4 sold 7.6 million units in the first fiscal year, which is the number the PlayStation 5 will need to beat.
On a similar note, Microsoft has quietly noted that the Xbox Series X and S have seen the biggest launch for an Xbox console history as well. Despite there being better availability, the console still hasn’t had the biggest launch overall though.
