EA: 55 Million Current Gen Consoles are in the Market

Approximately 55 million PS4 and Xbox One consoles are in the market, according to Electronic Arts.

Blake Jorgensen, EA’s chief financial officer, made the estimate during a recent earnings briefing, which was reported by GameSpot.

EA’s claim on the size of the current gen market was based on figures of console purchases up until the end of 2015.

Having broken 30 million sales in November 2015, PS4 sales have climbed to an estimated 36 million over the Christmas period. This puts Xbox One sales figures at a rough total of 19 million units, which fits in line with the estimate of 18 million units sold in early January 2016.

While the gap between global PS4 and Xbox One sales is an enormous one, MCV noted that the difference between sales figures is a close call in certain territories. The United Kingdom is one such market, where a difference of less than half a million units separates the number of units sold. However, MCV also noted that PS4 is dominant in most other European nations.

Blake Jorgensen said that their estimation of 55 million units sold is a far higher value than expected by industry insiders. Compared to the PS3/Xbox 360 console cycle, the current generation has sold almost 50% more, Jorgensen said.

Additionally, in November 2015 Jorgensen predicted that up to 50 or 51 million consoles would be sold by the end of 2015. This also proved to be a slight underestimation.

Jorgensen admitted that the number of PS4 and Xbox One’s sold had “exceeded virtually everyone’s forecast.”

PS4 and Xbox One sales enjoyed a large boost in numbers between Black Friday and Christmas. Games like Star Wars Battlefront, Black Ops 3, Fifa 16 and Fallout 4 led even more gamers to purchase a console. Indeed, Microsoft sold more Xbox consoles over Christmas 2015 than they did the previous year.

Looking at the year ahead, games like Far Cry Primal, No Man’s Sky, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, two Tom Clancy games (The Division and Ghost Recon: Wildlands), Doom, Dark Souls 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda will undoubtedly see console sales racking up ever more.
