The PS5 is Sony’s fastest-selling PlayStation console

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 is now its fastest-selling console of all time. The device has shifted more than 10 million units worldwide, reaching that colossal figure on July 18, 2021. This is just under one month faster than the PS4 hit the same milestone.

This is incredibly impressive because the PS5 has faced stock issues from day one. Sony hasn’t been able to keep up with the demand there is for its latest console. Each time more stock is sent to retailers, it sells out within a matter of hours.

Coupled with the huge number of scalpers picking up as many devices as they can to turn a profit on Ebay, and it seems like the demand for PS5s will never end. Of course, Sony has faced other issues such as a semiconductor shortage, something that doesn’t look like it’ll end anytime soon.

Off the back of the PS5’s success, Sony added that Spider-Man: Miles Morales has hit 6.5 million units sold since launch. It launched alongside the PS5, and is bundled with many units, causing sales for it to soar each time new stock comes to the market.

Returnal, another PS5 exclusive that launched this year, has sold 560,000 copies to date. The game isn’t as prevalent in PS5 bundles, with most copies sold with a PS5 being down to retailer discretion.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, this year’s most popular PS5 exclusive so far, is already at 1.1 million units sold after a month on the market. This title is bundled more with the PS5 in official products from Sony, which is definitely helping to boost sales.

CEO Jim Ryan has commented on the device’s launch, pointing to the Chinese launch as one of the most outstanding the company has ever seen. The market in the region is notoriously dominated by free-to-play mobile titles, with handhelds selling better than anything else there. However, the PS5 broke into the market and has continued to sell well since launch.

As supply evens out over the next year or so, Sony will almost certainly continue to see sales of this calibre for the PS5. Across both the standard edition and digital edition, the device is highly desirable due to a fantastic lineup of launch titles and exclusives. As long as the exclusives continue to be console sellers, the wave of success won’t end.
