Sony has joined the mini console trend, announcing the PlayStation Classic mini console. The PlayStation Classic is a reworked version of the original PlayStation that comes packaged with a number of games, and works on current hardware.
The PlayStation Classic is slated for release on December 3, 2018, making it the ideal Christmas present for any gamer who played the console the first time it was out. This is also the release date for the original PlayStation, which launched in 1994.
Sony say there will be 20 games in total on the PlayStation Classic, but have only confirmed a few of them so far. These games are: Final Fantasy 7, Jumping Flash, Ride Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. Each of these titles has proved to be popular with most, if not all, PlayStation gamers when they first released, making for a stellar beginning to the roster of games on the new mini console.
The PlayStation Classic boasts an HDMI output, meaning it will work with all modern monitors and televisions, a USB cable, and two controllers. The Nintendo mini consoles were only packaged with one controller each, so the addition of a second controller here makes this instantly more accessible for local multiplayer. Overall the console is 45 percent smaller than the original, good news for those hoping to squeeze it in alongside current generation systems.
The pricing for the PlayStation Classic is currently at $99.99 in the US, $129.99 in Canada, €99.99 in Europe, and £89.99 in the UK. Anyone looking to pre-order the console should do so soon before stock runs out, though with purchases limited to one per customer there should be a bare minimum of stock being sold on eBay at a markup.
Nintendo has seen great success with the two mini retro consoles they’ve released so far, the NES Classic and the SNES Classic. The SNES Classic proved to be so popular that a second run of the console with additional stock was manufactured by Nintendo. In addition to the PlayStation Classic there are versions of the SNK Neo Geo and Sega Mega Drive planned for similar mini console releases.
