2K has revealed that they are aiming for the Mafia series to become one of their biggest and best franchises following the release of the upcoming Mafia 3.
Developed by Hangar 13 and published by Take-Two’s 2K Mafia 3 is set to be the next major franchise, to be compared in popularity with other 2K franchises like Bioshock and Borderlands.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that the reaction to the reveal of the Mafia 2 successor has been hugely optimistic.
“We’ve had enormously positive feedback and an enormous amount of social traffic, more than ever before, in fact. It is looking very strong. I’m very excited about it,” he said, speaking to MCV.
Mafia 3 was announced with a teaser trailer behind closed doors at Gamescom. This third outing will be set in 1968 New Orleans, and will feature a large open world and variable approaches to missions.
Taking control of protagonist Lincoln Clay, players will try to begin their own organised criminal enterprise, fighting against the Italian mafia. Cover-based shooting, stealth, interrogation and fighting over mob-controlled territory will also feature in the game.
Take-Two’s most famous franchise, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto, generates countless comparisons with other open world games. However, Zelnick denied any comparisons between Mafia 3 and GTA, stating that “GTA is not up for comparison to any game.”
Although it won’t knock GTA off its perch at the top of the open world crime genre, Take-Two are enthusiastic about Mafia 3. 2010’s Mafia 2 sold in excess of 6M copies, and they hope the third will improve on that figure.
Mafia 3 is set to be released in 2016 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Wholesale pre-orders are expected to become available at selected distributors soon.
