Rockstar Games yesterday released a new story trailer for upcoming cowboy sequel Red Dead Redemption 2. The trailer showed new story details about where and when the game is set, as well as who the protagonist is going to be.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sequel to the incredibly popular Red Dead Redemption. So far Rockstar Games have confirmed that the title will release for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Spring 2018, but they and parent company Take-Two have declined to comment on whether or not there will be a PC version.
In Red Dead Redemption 2 players will take on the role of a new character, Arthur Morgan, a debt collector for the Van der Linde gang. Interestingly that’s the same gang John Marston, protagonist of the first game, was a member of before he decided to turn away from his life of crime.
Many speculated that players would take on the role of John Marston as a young man in the gang, and that the game would be a prequel. In the trailer fans can see a young Dutch, a prevalent antagonist from the first game, further cementing the fact that this game is set before the original. A second recognisable character named Bill Williamson can also be seen in the trailer, which could indicate that a young John Marston will appear at some point.
New environments will be making an appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2. Swamplands with Alligators can be seen, as well as thick forests and snowy mountains. The addition of a bow and arrow to the game’s arsenal will surely aid any hunting players do in these areas.
While some of the details were extremely clear in the trailer, some characters have cast doubt on the setting. An older woman who looks to be a returning character from the original game, but a little older, has had some press outlets guessing about the timeline. It’s possible that the game will have multiple protagonists, as Grand Theft Auto 5 did. Rockstar Games have a habit of introducing new characters in sequels, killing off older protagonists early on usually.
Finally, there is also no word on a multiplayer mode like Grand Theft Auto Online. The original game had an online mode but it was plagued with hackers. If Red Dead Redemption 2 is to have a multiplayer mode it will need to be far more secure.
