Unity acquires Parsec

Unity is continuing to add more tools to its offerings by acquiring Parsec. This is a remorse desktop tool that can be used to enable seamless gameplay experiences for those in any location worldwide.

Parsec was founded in 2016 and has gone on to become one of the best remote desktop services out there. It’s used by many publishers to work with press, allowing them to play a game on a PC on the other side of the world for preview events. Through the pandemic, the tool has become a vital part of every preview event, and has moved on to become the norm now, with many physical press events scrapped in favor of using Parsec.

Unity has acquired Parsec for $320 million. The deal is expected to close during the company’s third quarter, which ends on September 30, 2021. John Riccitiello, Unity’s CEO, explained in a recent investor call that Parsec is already used internally by many studios, so it makes sense to bring it into the portfolio of services developers can take advantage of with the engine.

Throughout the pandemic, Parsec saw growth of 170 percent year-on-year. Today, with more and more people shifting to work permanently from home, and companies opening up employment options for remote working, Parsec can only grow.

In December 2020, the company raised $25 million in Series B funding, all of which is being used to optimize the infrastructure used for its services and make for an even more outstanding product.

Unity is wise to invest in Parsec and bring it to the developers that use its engine. It’s a built-in way for developers to work together and coordinate on the same project. However, it’s also perfect for when developers want to start showing their game to the press. Everything is in one place, and it will eventually work together seamlessly.

Recently, Unity has been making more acquisitions and bolstering the power of its game engine. The more services it can offer in one place, the more developers will flock to it and start building their games with it. Making life easier for developers is how the company will acquire more customers, and Parsec is built to do just that.
