For the second week in a row Red Dead Redemption 2 has held the top spot in the UK physical charts. Thanks to these continued sales the game has become the number one best-selling game for Christmas, making it the first Christmas number one for Rockstar Games since 2002 when they released Grand Theft Auto Vice City.
Sales for Red Dead Redemption 2 have seen a boost of 26 percent week-on-week, which has helped it stay clear of FIFA 19. EA’s football title had an increase of 45 percent in sales, but that wasn’t enough to compete with Red Dead Redemption 2. However, FIFA 19 will still end 2018 as the best-selling game of the year for the UK, which is incredibly impressive considering it only launched a month earlier than Red Dead Redemption 2.
Currently the record for most Christmas number ones is held jointly between Call of Duty and FIFA, with eight a piece.
Week-on-week Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 saw an increase of 27 percent in sales. Even though it’s sold more than one million units in the UK it’s still not as popular as it is in the US, where Black Ops 4 is a market leader.
Thanks to a heavy discount Battlefield 5 is starting to see decent sales. The game received a boost of 55 percent week-on-week, landing it in fourth place in the chart.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate has fallen to fifth place this week, which was expected given that it’s a very new title. The game saw a drop of 24 percent in sales, but it’s now passed Splatoon 2 in total sales. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is now the fifth most successful game on the Nintendo Switch, after only three weeks.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition saw a fall in sales of 11 percent, dropping to seventh place. The game has seen a boost to sales thanks to Switch bundles proving to be popular in the lead up to Christmas. The game has managed to beat Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu and Super Smash Bros Ultimate to become the best-selling Switch game in the UK.
Spider-Man takes eighth place in the chart thanks to a sales spike of 62 percent week-on-week. The title has sold extremely well since it launched and seems to be continuing to do so.
Forza Horizon 4 saw sales increase by 35 percent week-on-week, securing it tenth place in the chart. The game has managed to sell more copies than Fallout 76, Battlefield 5, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy has kept up momentum and maintained sixth place in the chart. The game has a road ahead of it to compete with Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, currently in ninth place in the chart 18 months after release.
