While Gearbox officially revealed Borderlands 3 earlier this year, they have only just held official gameplay reveal event. The event took place last night on May 1, 2019, and gave fans some specific details about the upcoming third entry in the Borderlands series.
The event featured an hour-long gameplay video featuring one of the new main characters, Zane, as well as the previously known Amara the Siren. Many Youtubers were invited to the event in order to stream and create videos for their fans about the game, meaning many aspects of the gameplay have now been clarified.
For example, it’s now known that both climbing and sliding have been added to the series with Borderlands 3, and four completely new skill trees have been created for the brand new team of Vault Hunters. The core villains for Borderlands 3, the Calypso Twins, got a feature in the gameplay, and Gearbox couldn’t resist adding a throwback to classic Borderlands antagonist Handsome Jack.
People playing the event found it was possible to complete the game completely on their own, with the game adjusting for more players if they join. In addition, Randy Pitchford told everyone that there will be microtransactions, but they’ll relate purely to cosmetic items.
With Borderlands 3 Gearbox have taken inspiration from two key titles, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends. Currently Apex Legends is one of the most popular games on the planet, with superior shooting mechanics and likable characters. Titanfall 2 had one of the best stories in a shooter for a number of years, and any inspiration taken from it will only have enhanced Borderlands 3.
Sirens will play a big part in Borderlands 3’s story, and with one of the protagonists being a Siren it looks as though the story is going to be much more involved than in previous entries in the series.
The two characters that have been revealed so far are as engaging as ever, but feature a huge difference in the Borderlands formula. Now each character has three ultimate abilities to switch between, with skill trees that provide meaningful enhancements to each, as well as other perks as skills to use along the way. This investment into the RPG side of the series is sure to attract more fans to Borderlands 3 than any of the previous titles could have.
At the core of Borderlands 3 are the same mechanics and principles that drove the previous games to being as good as they were. The guns are insane, with hundreds of thousands of variants available, including an autonomous one that insults enemies. The characters too are as wacky as ever, but that plays more as a strength for Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 3 promises to reignite the single-player shooter later this year when it launches, but it will also revive a series that was one of the biggest in the world when Borderlands 2 first released.
