Week ending on December 21, 2019, the UK’s Top 10 chart of the best selling retail and wholesale video games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare holds the top of the UK physical charts. FIFA 20 rises to the second position. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is in the third place.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best-selling game at retail in the UK for the week leading up to Christmas 2019. The game saw a jump in sales of 42 percent week-on-week which helped it retain this number one position for another week ahead of FIFA 20.

FIFA 20 has also seen a Christmas sales surge over the past week, with sales increasing by 73 percent week-on-week, shooting the game up from third to second place in the chart.

Both FIFA and Call of Duty are the usual chart topping games for the Christmas period, with FIFA having been a Christmas number one eight times over previous years, and Call of Duty a total of nine times. Christmas 2018 was the first break for either of these titles as Christmas number one for a while, when Red Dead Redemption 2 took the top spot for the festive period.

Even though FIFA missed out on the Christmas top spot, EA still took second and third place, with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order coming in just behind FIFA. Sales for the latest Star Wars game were up week-on-week by 23 percent.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 year-on-year, even though Modern Warfare has been on the market two weeks less than Black Ops 4 was at this point in 2018.

FIFA 20’s sales on the other hand are down year-on-year in comparison to FIFA 19’s, while Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is ahead of EA’s 2018 shooter entry, Battlefield 5. However, sales are behind the last Star Wars entry, Battlefront 2, which launched in 2017. This result was expected though, since Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single player game.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition takes fourth place in the chart, with week-on-week sales up by 30 percent week-on-week, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 takes fifth, with sales down by 18 percent week-on-week. With a 21 percent increase in sales week-on-week, Pokemon Sword is in sixth place in the chart, and Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 sitting in eighth with sales up by 21 percent as well, giving Nintendo four of the top ten best-selling games for Christmas week.

Activision’s Crash Bandicoot games made a resurgence for the week, with Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled in ninth and tenth respectively. The games have seen some promotional pricing, which is most likely what boosted them.

Finally Just Dance 2020 is still in seventh place this week, outperforming the previous game in the franchise. The game’s biggest player base is on Nintendo Switch, accounting for 70 percent of all physical sales in the UK.
