Week ending on December 14, 2019, the UK’s Top 10 chart of the best selling retail and wholesale video games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare returns to the top of the UK physical charts. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order rises to the second position. FIFA 20 drops to the third place.

With a week to go until Christmas, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks like it may be at the top of the UK retail sales chart as Christmas number one for 2019. Despite a drop in sales of 10 percent week-on-week, the game is holding strong against FIFA 20, which has dropped to third place as sales fall by 41 percent week-on-week.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order took second place for the week, with 3,000 sales separating it from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’s thought that anticipation for the new movie, Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker, has helped drive sales for EA and Respawn Entertainment’s story-driven Star Wars game. Sales are up for the game by 30 percent week-on-week, and with the movie’s release next week it could potentially steal Christmas number one for 2019 from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition has seen a great December due to the launch of a new Nintendo Switch bundle. However, sales are dipping, down 30 percent week-on-week, but the game still sits in fourth place.

2,000 units separate Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition and Luigi’s Mansion 3 in fifth, which has seen an increase in sales of 49 percent week-on-week. The game has proven to be extremely popular with Switch fans, outselling the previous game in the series, and has even sold better than New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have this year.

Just Dance 2020 has dropped slightly from sixth to seventh this week, but is still selling extremely well. The Nintendo Wii version sales are down year-on-year, which should have been expected, and the Nintendo Switch version of the game is currently the best-selling.

New Xbox One hardware bundles have boosted Project Cars 2 and Tekken 7 back into the top ten, sitting in tenth and ninth respectively. The only other fact of note from the UK top 40 best-selling games is that there are nine Super Mario games throughout the chart in the lead up to Christmas.
