Avalanche Studios restructured and teases new game

The developer behind the Just Cause series, Avalanche Studios, has restructured into Avalanche Studios Group.

Alongside its restructuring, the company has also teased a brand new game. It’s a first-person shooter, though the teaser trailer shows nothing more than a cave and someone shooting at something inside of it. More should follow once the game is further along in development.

By changing its structure to a Group, the company can now include all three of its creative divisions. These are Systemic Reactions, Expansive Worlds, and Avalanche Studios.

Expansive Worlds will focus more on outdoor games such as The Hunter: Call of the Wilds titles. Avalanche Studios will remain working on AAA games like Rage 2 and the Just Cause series as they always have.

Systemic Worlds is the self-publishing brand that the group uses. They previously published Generation Zero, an open-world survival game set on an island on which machines had wiped out every other human. This new game will also be published under the brand, whatever it ends up being.

The company promises that there are multiple games in progress right now, in addition to this new game that they’ve teased today. It’s possible that there’s a new Just Cause game in the works, but nothing has been announced yet, and probably won’t be until the time that E3 would have been held.

While Rage 2 was well-received by fans and critics, it wasn’t as popular as many thought it would be. Some said that it relied too heavily on bright colors and the sort of humor that the Borderlands series is known for. In some ways, it felt like it had lost its identity.

Generation Zero is still played a lot by fans, but it’s nowhere near as popular as the developer’s larger franchises such as Just Cause. With the next generation of games hardware on the way this year, Avalanche Studios Group should be working hard on what they can offer as launch titles, or at least games that will release in the year after the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X come out.
