On the 6th of August Sony held their latest State of Play event. This event was set to focus on news for PlayStation 4 games, and prior to it Sony explained that there would be no big PlayStation 5 announcements. Even without much next-generation news, the event was packed with big announcements and reveals.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
The first big feature was on Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. The game received a 5 minute gameplay trailer that showed some of the new content, including a new Inverted Mode for every level. The game seems set to please both new players, and fans of the franchise, combining some new elements with the established norms.
Hitman Trilogy VR
The next announcement was that the entire Hitman trilogy will have VR support. IO Interactive revealed a new trailer that showed the protagonist, Agent 47, walking around a well-known mission in first person. When VR support will come to all three games is not known, but many people are excited about the fact that it’s on the way. It may even serve to boost the VR segment over the next year or so.
Braid
The next announcement was short, but touching. The beloved game Braid is getting an anniversary edition, featuring new artwork and even a developer commentary.
Spelunky 2
The highly anticipated Spelunky 2 was the next game on at the show. The game has been revealed before, but no release date was given until now. The game will launch on PlayStation 4 on the 15th of September this year. The game also had a few new gameplay features revealed, such as the hub world which players will fill with the characters they discover on new runs.
Control Expansion 2
Remedy Entertainment revealed the second expansion for Control, AWE. This expansion will bring the worlds of Control and Alan Wake together, though the details on how are very light at the moment. Fans of both of these games have been eager to see a crossover, and with the expansion launching later this month on the 27th of August, they don’t have long to wait.
Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series
The Vader Immortal VR series has been one of the best experiences you can have in VR for years. Now the game is coming to PlayStation VR, allowing players to experience what it is to be a sith lord in VR.
Aeon Must Die
A new game called Aeon Must Die was announced, though it has been marred with some controversy. There seems to be an issue with developers and other creatives not being paid for the work on the game, so it’s unknown just when this title will be released.
Hood: Outlaws and Legends
This is a brand new game that is also coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One. It’s a multiplayer heist game that will see players take on a team of enemy players, as well as NPC enemies in the game. It has a medieval setting and looks like it could mix up the mainstream multiplayer game market.
The Pedestrian
The Pedestrian was announced previously, but now the game has a confirmed release window of January 2021. The game sees players control stick figures across signs as they seek to escape.
Bugsnax
When bugsnax was announced, it received a very warm reception. Now we know that the game is going to launch this Christmas on PlayStation 4, though a PlayStation 5 release date has not been confirmed.
The Pathless
The Pathless is heading to PlayStation 5 as well as PlayStation 4. This game is from the creators of ABZU, a well known narrative-driven game. The game revolves around players finding their own path by using the spirit world, and should prove to be one of the biggest indie hits of this year when it comes to PlayStation 4.
Genshin Impact
A PlayStation 4 game that takes heavy inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Genshin Impact will launch for PlayStation 4 in fall of 2020. The open world action RPG will likely take flak from Zelda fans, as another recent PlayStation 4 game did, but should also serve as a great substitute for Sony fans.
Auto Chess
There have been discussions about Auto Chess coming to consoles for some time. This game started as a mod for Dota 2, but after exploding with players last year, a full blown release will hit PlayStation 4 on the 31st of October 2020.
Temtem
The Pokemon style monster taming game that proved to be a hit on Steam this year, Temtem, will be launching on PlayStation 5 in 2021. No specific release date was given, but it’s likely that it will launch in Q1 in order to make the most of the lack of new releases for the next-generation console.
Godfall
Finally, there was a developer walkthrough for the highly-anticipated Godfall. The walkthrough went through the game’s controls, how they work in the game with various mechanics, and showed off a few new features as a result. The game will be hitting PlayStation 5 later this year alongside the console, though we are still yet to get a date for this.
