New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe releases and takes top

This week the UK physical sales chart was dominated by the newly released New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is a port of the Wii U version, and the Luigi version released a year or so after in celebration of the Year of Luigi. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is the fourth Nintendo Switch title to top the chart. Previously Super Smash Bros Ultimate topped the chart, with Mario Tennis Aces before that, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition in April 2017.

This port of New Super Mario Bros U has performed far better than the original. The Switch version sold 24.8 percent more copies at launch than the Wii U version. This excludes digital sales which could push this improvement up even more.

FIFA 19 saw a drop in sales of 52 percent week-on-week, which helped New Super Mario Bros U take the top spot in the chart. FIFA 19 was pushed down into second place in the chart as a result, and Red Dead Redemption 2, experiencing a 53 percent week-on-week drop in sales, dropped to third place in the chart.

Grand Theft Auto 5 re-entered the chart this week, rising eight places to take eighth place. Grand Theft Auto Online saw some new content drop recently, which could account for the game’s re-emergence.

The first half of January hasn’t seen many new releases, but the second half of the month looks to be an improvement. This Friday Ace Combat 7 will launch for all major platforms, and Resident Evil 2 Remake should give a much needed boost on the 25th of January. Finally, Kingdom Hearts 3 will be the largest release of the month, with many consumers eagerly anticipating the title’s release after a decade of development.
