Week ending on January 5, 2019, the UK’s Top 10 chart of the best selling retail and wholesale video games, FIFA 19 tops the charts once again, Red Dead Redemption 2 takes the second position, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 remains in the third place.

The UK physical games chart for the week has revealed that once again FIFA 19 is the best-selling boxed title at retail. With no new games releasing in the first week of 2019 FIFA 19 has had to do very little to fight for the top spot in the physical chart. The rest of the top 10 in the chart are largely the same as the week before for the same reason.

Red Dead Redemption 2, which claimed the top spot last week, has swapped with FIFA 19 and now sits in second in the chart. Sales of Red Dead Redemption 2 have dropped by 64 percent week-on-week. FIFA 19’s sales similarly fell, but only by 62 percent, which is what helped the game claim the top spot in the chart this week.

Maintaining its position in third is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The game saw a fall in sales of 71 percent week-on-week. Super Smash Bros Ultimate remains unchanged in fourth, though it too saw a sales drop week-on-week of 56 percent. Battlefield 5 sits nicely in fifth to round off the top five, unmoved from the week prior.

These dramatic drops in sales have been caused by the end of the Christmas shopping period. Overall games have seen a 59 percent drop week-on-week, lining them up with sales from the same time last year, if not a little lower. January is always difficult for consumers, since many employers pay wages a week or so early to help with holiday spending, meaning January is a tough month in terms of budgeting for many.

New Super Mario Bros U is due out later this week, with Resident Evil 2 Remake out on January 25th. Kingdom Hearts 3 is rounding of the month with a bang when it launches on the 29th of January, making it one of the busiest January lineups of recent years.

Super Mario Bros U was one of the most popular titles on the Wii U, and should sell well on the Switch given the recent success of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Both Resident Evil 2 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 are highly anticipated by fans and those who are completely new to each series. It will be interesting to see how well each one fares as they release.
