In terms of boxed sales only the latest God of War has become the fastest-selling title in the history of the franchise. The game is the first brand new entry for Playstation 4 and has been met with highly positive reviews across the board. Interestingly the game was missing from the Amazon UK store before launch.
God of War sold more than 35 percent additional physical units in the first week on sale than the last fastest-selling title in the franchise, God of War 3. This fantastic sales record has pushed the game to the top of the UK physical games sales chart, ahead of last major Sony exclusive, Shadow of the Colossus Remastered.
Far Cry 5 has been knocked down into second position this week, after a three week stint in first place in the chart. The latest God of War continues the trend of success seen in God of War 2 and 3, despite only being available on Playstation 4.
Yakuza 6: Song of Life also released last week, and has debuted in third position in the chart, the best launch for a Yakuza game to date. Yakuza Kiwami had the previous best launch for a Yakuza game, and Yakuza 6 beat it by 300 units.
As a result of two new titles the week has seen a much needed boost, with around 250,000 games sold over the time period. This is impressive but the physical games chart is still fairly easy to get onto, given that there is a distinct lack of interesting releases over the next month or so, of which God of War and Yakuza 6: Song of Life were exceptions.
The full physical games chart for the last week, which you can see above, is made up of six console exclusive titles, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition in fifth, Super Mario Odyssey in sixth, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in ninth, and PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS in eighth. Microsoft’s Xbox One exclusive Sea of Thieves has slipped to eleventh however, despite being such a highly anticipated title.
