In a recent press release Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Turtle Rock Studios announced that they were working on a new title called Back 4 Blood.
Back 4 Blood is described as a cooperative first-person shooter in which players will take on waves of zombies. The goal of the game is to revitalize a genre that has been lying dormant for quite some time.
The last great cooperative zombie FPS was Left 4 Dead 2, which is still played today by a dedicated fanbase. Overkill’s The Walking Dead was aimed at the same audience, but due to financial issues with the developer the game has now had development stopped, with the console versions canceled completely.
Back 4 Blood is being developed by some of the team and creators behind Left 4 Dead. The game is said to be a premium title which is being built from the ground up to take what made Left 4 Dead so great, and create a title with next-gen capabilities, gameplay, and visuals that players will love.
David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said that the company were extremely pleased and excited to be partnering with Turtle Rock Studios on Back 4 Blood. He added that with the skills and experience Turtle Rock Studios have, together the pair will create a new beloved title for the hardcore cooperative zombie shooter community.
Chris Ashton, Design Director and Co-Founder of Turtle Rock Studios, said that returning to a genre that the studio loves with 10 additional years of experience is incredible. He went on to say that partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often. Apparently both companies have a player-first mentality, which Ashton says is going to propel the game’s development into a place that the wider community will enjoy. Additionally this will allow the developers to feel free to create systems and content that they think players will enjoy, rather than for other purposes such as monetization.
Creative Director and Co-Founder of Turtle Rock Studios, Phil Robb, said that the studio isn’t taking any time to rest right now. According to Robb plans are already in motion to expand the team at Turtle Rock Studios to combat the biggest challenge they’ve ever faced. They fully believe that Back 4 Blood needs to stand out from the rest of games on the market, not just other cooperative zombie shooters, and they’re dedicated to making that happen.
