U.S. best selling video games: Week of May 16, 2020

Animal Crossing New Horizons - Reveal

The US weekly sales chart was once again topped by Animal Crossing: New Horizons as the best-selling game for the week. Despite a 12 percent drop in sales week-on-week, the game has held strong in first place due to a lack of competition.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rose from third place last week to second place in the chart this week. The game saw a decrease in week-on-week sales of 16 percent, but once again the lack of any real competition in terms of other releases means that it’s able to rise through the chart.

MLB The Show 20 dropped to third place this week. Despite the drop in sales for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the numbers are clearly high enough to push above MLB The Show 20.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw a 5 percent increase in sales week-on-week, jumping from sixth to fourth place this week. This is directly linked to the sales of Nintendo Switch hardware, which are clearly still doing well in the US. While availability for the hardware does seem to be getting better, it’s still nowhere near what it was before the coronavirus (COVID-19) caused delays.

NBA 2K20 saw a drop in sales of 8 percent week-on-week, falling to fifth place. There is currently a discount that offers the game for around $3 on the Nintendo eShop, which could impact physical sales of the game moving forward.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order moved up to sixth from ninth last week. The game recently got a big update with lots of new free content. This could have caused an increase in sales.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 moved from eighth to seventh this week despite a 6 percent decrease in week-on-week sales. Just Dance 2020 on the other hand saw a big move from sixteenth to eighth, thanks to a 42 percent increase in sales week-on-week. The sales boost is the result of some promotional pricing for the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 round off the chart in ninth and tenth respectively. Both games have re-entered the top ten from twelfth and eleventh respectively during the previous week.

A key part of why Grand Theft Auto 5 is selling so well is the fact that it is currently free on the Epic Games Store. The game is quite cheap to buy in a physical boxed form, and it seems as though the Epic Games Store promotion is causing more copies to be sold.
