Sumo Digital, the studio behind Sonic game such as All-Stars Sonic Racing, and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, announced Team Sonic Racing Racing. The game will be a new kart racing title featuring characters from the Sonic universe.
Team Sonic Racing will be an all-new kart racing game featuring only characters from the Sonic universe, including some enemies. This differs from the previous Sonic racing titles Sumo digital have created in that it won’t be bringing in characters from other IPs.

The game will see players taking on the role of one of 15 different characters such as Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow, racing across a number of different Sonic-themed tracks. Each character will correspond with different ability categories; Speed, Technique, and Power. The combination of these abilities must be used within a team in order to help them win a race.
Races will contain 14 items which can be collected on tracks and used to either boost the character or hinder enemies. Players will need to work with the other characters in their team in order to pull of Team Ultimate attacks which will devastate opposing teams and give them a serious advantage.
Game modes in Team Sonic Racing include Time Trial, Grand Prix, Exhibition, and a Team Adventure Mode. Whether or not the Team Adventure Mode will feature free-roaming as characters in Karts in a similar way to other Kart racing games such as Crash Team Racing has not been confirmed.
3D Sonic titles tend to have a habit of selling worse than the 2D entries to the franchise, which is thought to be due to the fact that most of the appeal in Sonic games comes from the original titles, which were 2D platformers. Team Sonic Racing is a completely different beast however, being closer to a racing game than a Sonic title, which may convince ore gamers to invest in it.
Sonic Team Racing is slated for a Winter 2018 release date, but Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing will be free as part of Xbox Games with Gold in June in order to help promote the announcement. Team Sonic Racing will be available for PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, but there’s currently no word on whether there will be cross-platform multiplayer.
