The Pokemon Company has announced in Famitsu that more than 300 million copies of the Pokemon games have been shipped worldwide.
The latest games in the series which launched earlier this month, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, gave the series the boost needed to reach this number. Officially the number includes 76 Pokemon games including spin-offs from February 1996 to February 2017.
The Pokemon Company is a Japanese company that is responsible for licensing and marketing the Pokemon games. It was established by the three businesses that hold the copyright for Pokemon, developers Game Freak, Nintendo, and Creatures.
The Pokemon series is currently on the seventh generation of game, with the latest tiles being Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. These games combine every Pokemon ever and bring them all into one place where players are able to catch them all in a brand new story, completely different to Pokemon Sun and Moon.
The very first titles in the series were released in Japan in 1996, Pocket Monsters Red and Green. The games that have become known to the wider world as the first generation, Pokemon Red and Blue, were released later that year. Pokemon Yellow, the final game to make up the first generation of games released around the world over the course of 1998 and 1999.
Alongside the core game series which sees players capture, train, and battle Pokemon there have been a number of spin-offs. The Game Boy had the Pokemon Trading Card Game, the Game Boy Colour Pokemon Pinball, and on Nintendo DS there is the popular Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. So far the only Pokemon title available for the Nintendo Switch is Pokken Tournament DX, a Pokemon fighting title.
Over each generation the Pokemon games have released on a number a platforms, from the original Nintendo Game Boy, the Game Boy Colour, the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo DS, and the Nintendo 3DS. The next mainline installment of the Pokemon series will be on Nintendo Switch, as Game Freak told press earlier this year that Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon will be the last mainline pokemon games for Nintendo 3DS consoles.
