Week ending on January 18, 2020, the UK’s Top 10 chart of the best selling retail and wholesale video games, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot releases and tops the UK physical charts. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare slips to the second position. FIFA 20 holds the third place.

Last week in the UK Dragon Ball Z: Karakot was the best-selling game at retail. Sales were up by 13 percent compared to the last release in the franchise, Dragon Ball FighterZ, though it’s worth noting that this game was up against Monster Hunter World when it launched in the same month in 2018.

While having a Dragon Ball game at the top of the sales charts is slightly unusual, even in January when there are very few other releases, but even more unusual is the presence of so many 3DS games in the top ten chart.

WarioWare Gold has shot up from 827th place to fifth this week, and Yo-Kai Watch has re-entered the chart in eighth. Elsewhere in the chart the two previous Yo-Kai Watch games, Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls have moved up to twelfth and thirteenth place respectively.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force has jumped up to 26th place this week, and Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley has moved into 46th place. Finally, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal has moved into 51st place in the chart.

The reason behind all of these Nintendo 3DS games seeing such a surge in sales is a single retailer, Argos. Apparently the store has been selling off their excess stock, probably in an attempt to make room for new stock with the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. These 3DS games have seen a price cut of more than half, though this isn’t expected to continue into next week.

The only new release this week was Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. This is a re-release of a Wii U game for the Nintendo Switch, and debuted in 17th place in the chart this week. Sales are 17 percent stronger compared to the original Wii U release, and the game has actually placed one place higher than it did when it launched for the Wii U.
