Animal Crossing: New Horizons is top seller in Japan in 2020 so far

Famitsu has released a list of the best-selling games in Japan for 2020 so far. The list shows that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best-selling game the region has seen for 2020 to date, with over five million units sold since it launched in March.

This list consists of only retail and game card sales. Impressively, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold more than five times the number of units than the closest competitor, which is Final Fantasy VII Remake. The beloved Final Fantasy game has sold a total 931,165 copies in 2020 so far.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons managed to break sales records when it launched in Japan this year. It became the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game to date, and has now been confirmed as the best-selling Switch game of all time for the region too.

The list also covers revenue generated for 2020 so far. In Japan, consumers have spent 95.47 billion Yen, roughly $905 million, on software, and 79.3 billion Yen, roughly $751.9 million, on hardware for the year to date. In total that’s 174.8 billion Yen, or $1.6 billion, for 2020 from game products retail alone.

Both software and hardware have seen a significant increase from the first half of 2019, which saw games generate 73.99 billion Yen, about $701.4 million, from software, and 66.1 billion Yen, or $626.7 million, from hardware. Total revenue for the same period in 2019 was 140 billion Yen, or $1.3 billion.

Famitsu also revealed the latest console sales figures for Japan. The Nintendo Switch was the obvious leader with 2.6 million units sold. This pushes the Switch’s lifetime sales up to 14 million in Japan alone.

The PlayStation 4 has sold 435,812 for 2020 so far, which brings total sales for the region to 9.2 million. Finally, the Xbox One sold 2,685 units, which makes lifetime sales total 113,931. Unfortunately for Microsoft, their console was even outsold by the Nintendo 3DS, with 33,000 units for the year sold so far. The 3DS has now sold over 24.5 million units in Japan to date.
