Super Mario Maker 2 holds the top of UK physical chart

Super Mario Maker 2 has retained its position at the top of the UK retail chart this week, in a period where Nintendo Switch games have performed particularly well in the top 40.

Even with a drop of 47 percent in week-on-week sales, Super Mario Maker 2 has stuck at the top of the UK retail sales chart. The biggest competition, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled, saw a similar drop in sales of 45 percent week-on-week, but still holds out in second place.

F1 2019 holds third place for another week, though it has seen a drop of 57 percent in week-on-week sales. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition on the other hand, has been rising up the chart, moving from fourth last week to fifth this week, with a 9 percent rise in sales week-on-week. This makes three of the top five games in the UK retail chart racing titles.

Other Nintendo Switch titles have been rising in the chart with increased sales as well: Super Mario Party saw an increase of 1 percent, Super Mario Odyssey saw an increase of 14 percent, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe saw a rise of 11 percent, but Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu saw a decrease of 1 percent.

The reason for Nintendo Switch titles performing better than others is most likely due to the fact that handheld titles are more accessible for consumers in the summer months. Portability becomes key at this time of year as consumers spend more time outdoors, and go on holiday.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One titles have seen older titles make leaps in the chart thanks to promotional summer pricing. Mortal Kombat 11 saw an increase of 32 percent in sales, moving up fourteen places to tenth. Minecraft moved from 22nd to 13th with a 6 percent boost in sales too.

After falling to 20th place recently, FIFA 19 is on the cusp of returning to the top 10 retail chart, rising to 11th with a 14 percent boost in sales.

New games that debuted last week have seen some big drops in sales since they’ve released. The Sinking City fell from 12th place to 37th with a drop in sales of 60 percent week-on-week. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, rose last week with the release of the Nintendo Switch version, but this week it dropped from 9th down to 34th due to a fall in sales of 62 percent.

Both Judgement, from Sega, and Car Mechanic Simulator, from Ravenscourt, have fallen out of the top 40.
