Top 20 best-selling games in the US in September 2017

Destiny 2

The NPD Group has released their full report for video game software and hardware sales in the US for September 2017.

Destiny 2 from Activision is at the top of every chart for the platforms it’s available on. The game is even at the top of the list of best selling games for 2017 and across all platforms for the month of September, excluding any digital sales the title may have. The game’s total revenue for its first month was stronger than that of the original Destiny.

The rest of the top five games for September 2017 in the US are NBA 2K18 in second, Madden NFL 18 in third, FIFA 18 in fourth and Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle in fifth. Grand theft Auto 5 is still holding onto a top 10 position in seventh, and Rainbow Six: Siege rounds off in tenth behind The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Year-on-year spending during September has seen an increase of 49 percent, with the total for September 2017 at $744 million. Within this Destiny 2 had the strongest first-month of spending than any other game of 2017, passing Ghost Recon: Wildlands to become the best selling game of the year so far. With two new shooters arriving in the next month, Call of Duty WW2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2, it faces steep competition to maintain this status.

As of this month Psyonix, publisher and developer of Rocket League, are now part of NPD’s Digital Leader Panel. As of this month the NPD Group will be tracking the digital sales of Psyonix’s games, but Rocket League didn’t make it into any of the charts this time.

In hardware total revenue has increased by 34 percent to $316 million. Out of the current generation consoles the Nintendo Switch came out on top selling the most, but the Playstation 4 generated the highest consumer spend. In terms of console units the SNES Classic sold the most, though this console’s units are limited to a small run and no more will be manufactured. However, this is still notable given that the console launched on September 29th, and has surpassed the sales of even the NES Classic.

For the whole of 2017 hardware spending has increased to $2.1 billion, a jump of 20 percent, and hardware accessories sales have risen by 39 percent to $1.2 billion for September 2017.
