The year 2019 has seen a number of big game releases, some of which were expected whilst many, including some of the most successful, definitely weren’t. Here are some of the best selling games from throughout 2019, each of which topped sales charts at different points in the year.
Mario kicked things off for the year with a bang. This game is an updated version of New Super Mario Bros U, which was originally released for the Nintendo Wii U in 2012. With a much larger install base for Nintendo’s latest handheld console, the game has proved to be far more popular this time around, and is the only game currently available on Nintendo Switch in China.
Arguably the most unexpected hit of the year, the remake of Resident Evil 2 has now sold more than five million copies worldwide. The game reimagines the story of the original game, and introduced a number of new people to the series.
After years of delays the third installment in the Kingdom Hearts series finally released this year. It was met with hugely popular reviews from critics and fans, making the series relevant once again. The game’s first DLC. ReMind, is due for release in 2020.
As the spin-off game from the last mainline entry to the series, Far Cry 5, New Dawn didn’t sell as well as its predecessor. However, the game was still very popular, streamlining many of Far Cry 5’s mechanics and adding a number of new, incredibly enjoyable, mechanics.
Anthem has had a tough time this year. The game launched to high sales, but fans quickly turned on developers BioWare for releasing what felt like a half-finished game. Now, almost a year after it launched, the game is much closer to being what fans expected it to be, but still has a long way to go.
The fifth mainline Devil May Cry game was the most popular so far. The game reinvigorated the series, bringing many YouTubers and Twitch streamers to the games for the very first time. While some fans were disappointed that Capcom didn’t choose to continue the DmC line, Devil May Cry was a great game for all fans.
The first Division game from Ubisoft received a similar reception to Anthem, but the developers managed to overcome the shortfalls of the first game with this sequel. A huge part of what made the game so successful is the fact that once payers finish the game and clear the map, it is overtaken by a new enemy force, providing a meaningful endgame that’s also completely new.
The latest From Software release didn’t disappoint fans. The game evolves the classic souls formula, but brings it up to date with faster paced action and a brand new stamina system. The game is so good that it won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019, against some stiff competition.
