Nintendo ruled the UK games market in December 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2

Throughout December in the UK Nintendo was the biggest publisher of physical games. A report from UKIE/GfK has revealed that more than 30 percent of all the games sold in the month were for Nintendo platforms.

Of the more than 30 percent of Nintendo games sold physically in the UK in December 2018, 29.5 percent were for Nintendo Switch alone. This pushed the console to become the second most popular for the month, just behind the PlayStation 4 which accounted for 39.7 percent of the games sold physically for December.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate was, unsurprisingly, the lead factor in Nintendo’s success. The game sold 284,155 physical copies in December alone. With figures such as these it’s easy to see why the game became the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game of all time.

The best-selling title of December didn’t go to Super Smash Bros Ultimate however. The top selling games for the month were: Red Dead Redemption 2, FIFA 19, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in first, second, and third respectively. As a result, Super Smash Bros Ultimate came in as the fourth best-selling game of the month.

In the top ten best-selling games for the month were two Nintendo titles, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition. Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu just missed out on making it three, coming in at twelfth place in the list. If the figures for Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee had been combined, the resulting game could have been in eighth place in the list.

19.3 percent of all games sold for the month were published by Nintendo. This puts the company ahead of EA, which published 13.6 percent of all games sold in December, the biggest sellers of which were FIFA 19 and Battlefield 5.

Just Cause 4, a new release for December from Square Enix, debuted in 14th place in the list, showing strong opening month sales.

5.5 million games were sold in December 2018, which is a 6 percent drop from December 2017. Software revenue however was maintained at around £182.7 milion.
