FIFA 20 is the final number one of 2019 in Europe

FIFA 20 Champions Edition

It has been confirmed that the most downloaded game across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Australia in the build up to Christmas was Grand Theft Auto 5. The six year old game sold more digital copies than FIFA 20, which comes in second place.

This data comes from GSD, and usually shows which triple A games have been selling the most copies from the main publishers in the market.

FIFA 20 might have missed out on being the best selling Christmas game digitally, but it was the better selling game across the EMEAA in terms of physical and digital sales, making it the number one seller in Europe. In the UK the best selling game for Christmas was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

With physical and digital sales combined, Grand Theft Auto 5 is in fourth place in the chart, with Luigi’s Mansion 3 in fifth on physical sales alone since Nintendo don’t share their digital sales data. Luigi’s third outing could well have placed better if digital sales were available for analysis.

Other Nintendo games that have made it into the top ten on their physical sales alone also include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition in sixth, Pokemon Sword in eighth, and Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 in tenth. Just Dance 2020 sits in seventh, and while it isn’t a Nintendo exclusive, the majority of the game’s sales have been for Nintendo Switch, meaning it too could have charted higher with Nintendo’s sales data.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is second in the combined sales chart, with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in third. The latest Star Wars game is still no doubt capitalising on the recent movie release, though it is also fantastic by itself.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is proving to be a great seller in both physical and digital sales, placing ninth in the combined chart. Only time will tell if it will take the mantle of Grand Theft Auto 5 when support for the modern day open world game is scaled back.

The top ten best-selling games chart with combined digital and physical sales in the EMEAA for the week ending on December 21 are as follows.

1. FIFA 20
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
3. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
4. Grand Theft Auto 5
5. Luigi’s Mansion 3
6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition
7. Just Dance 2020
8. Pokemon Sword
9. Red Dead Redemption 2
10. Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020
