During the month of January 2022, US consumers spent a total of $4.7 billion on video games which is a 2% decrease compared to the previous year, according to the latest NPD data.
While consumer spending on video games appears to be at a slight decline, the hardware spending for the month of January has seen a 22% increase in year-over-year sales, reaching the $390 million mark. According to the market research group, this marks the highest hardware earnings for the month since January 2009 which was around $447 million.
The newest Sony console, PlayStation 5 ended up on top of the list in both units sold as well as dollars with the latest Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S coming in second.
The best-selling video games of the month were the latest Pokemon installment, Pokemon Legends: Arceus with Call of Duty: Vanguard being right behind it. Monster Hunter: Rise by Capcom managed to snag the third spot on the list for the month of January. Madden NFL came in fourth.
God of War 2018 jumped from 146th place to fifth, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morals took the sixth place. One new release that managed to take a spot on the list was Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Extraction, managing to snag the ninth spot right behind Mario Kart 8.
Video game accessories have also seen a significant decline in yearly sales, earning a total of $185 million in January, which is about 15% less compared to the previous year. The best-selling accessory during the month of January was Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller.
