April was not a good month for the gaming industry in the United States, as, on the whole, spending dropped 3% from last year to $4.1 billion. Controversial action title from South Korea, Stellar Blade, was the only major release of the month, and despite its success, that’s the end of the good news.
In second place is Helldivers 2, which is impressive considering sales dropped a stunning 70% from March. Sony managed to anger the game’s community, resulting in a historic amount of negative reviews, and while the situation has cooled down, the damage may have been done.
Sea of Thieves, in its first month of availability on Sony’s PlayStation after being an Xbox console exclusive for years, made a massive gain and went from No. 55 to No. 4. The Fallout franchise had a similar increase, thanks to the success of the Amazon series, with Fallout 4 rocketing from No. 87 to No. 5 and Fallout 76 going from No. 159 to No. 8.
Last month’s top performer, Dragon’s Dogma 2, slid to No. 7, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, MLB: The Show 24, and Hogwarts Legacy round out the top ten. Rise of Ronin and Princess Peach: Showtime, two of March’s new releases, fell out of the top ten to No. 11 and No. 15, respectively.
Even mobile games weren’t spared from the downturn, with Last War: Survival, Candy Crush Saga, and Evony as the only three in the top to grow from March.
Hardware sales also fell, with a drop of at least 26% across all manufacturers, with a net total loss of 43%, dropping to $203 million in total, yet Sony’s PlayStation 5 remained on top for another month. Behind were the Nintendo Switch and, lastly, Microsoft’s X-Box series consoles.
As a result of the decline in hardware sales, accessories also fell by 4% to $152 million.
