According to GfK figures, more than 340,000 boxed games were sold at retail in the UK last week.
This is still a week-on-week drop for boxed game sales of 28 percent, but that comparison is against the launch week for both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and DOOM Eternal. That week was the biggest that the UK has seen at retail so far in 2020. In comparison with the week before that phenomenal sales week, this week’s sales are up by 124 percent.
The UK games retail market is facing a number of hardships right now, which is why this week’s sales are so impressive. Many retailers, such as GAME and Argos, have been forced to close since they are deemed non-essential. This effort is being taken to slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The best-selling game for the week was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which saw a boost in sales of 78 percent week-on-week. FIFA 20 comes in second with a slightly smaller boost of 53 percent week-on-week.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons saw a drop in sales of 81 percent week-on-week, falling to third place in the chart. All Nintendo Switch games saw a drop this week, though it’s thought that this is because of the sheer unavailability of Nintendo Switch consoles in the country right now.
DOOM Eternal, which was in second place, fell to fourth place with a drop in sales week-on-week of 76 percent.
A number of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One exclusives have been boosted further down in the chart. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Forza Horizon 3, Sea of Thieves, and PlayStation VR Worlds all moved up because of a rise in console bundle purchases. Many people are buying these bundles to keep them occupied whilst being stuck indoors at home.
