Video Game Platforms

Below is a brief description of major video game platforms including 3DS, NDS, PC, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, Vita, Wii, Wii-U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

 

3ds-logo  Nintendo 3DS, is a handheld mobile platform based on Nintendo 3DS consoles, which was first released on 25 March 2011.  It can display 3D image and videos without use of 3D glasses. It succeeds NDS platforms and is back compatible with DS and DSi consoles. The console is based on Dual-Core ARM11 MPCore, single-core ARM9 CPU, 128 MB FCRAM, 6 MB VRAM memery, 2 GB SD card 1 GB internal flash memory storage. The operating system is Nintendo 3DS OS.

 

nds-logo  Nintendo DS (or NDS) is a handheld mobile platform based on Nintendo’s DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL consoles. NDS platform is succeeded by 3DS platform which offers 3D capabilities, though NDS platform still keeps demand and has some selling potential for traders. The console is based on a 67.028 MHz ARM946E-S and one 33.514 MHz ARM7TDMI CPU, and 4 MB RAM memory. The NDS format was succeeded by eDS format.

 

pc-logoPC and Mac – the game platform is based on personal computer. It usually operates with Windows OS for PC or with iOS for Mac computers. Most of video games also have version on PC. In some countries PC is most used platform for games. There are increasing opportunities for downloading PC games from the Internet. Such online PC game stores as Steam, offer a wide range of PC games for download. This provides significant business opportunities for traders of activation codes for PC games and online stores of PC games.

 

PS2 Logo PlayStation 2 (or PS2) is Sony’s sixth generation platform based on PlayStation 2 console. It firsts released on March 2000, succeeding PlayStation platform, and is back compatible with the original PlayStation format. PS2 has Sony’s “Emotion Engine” CPU at 294.912 MHz (at launch), 299 MHz (newer models), with 128-bit SIMD capabilities, 32 MB of Direct RAMBUS or RDRAM and 4 MB eDRAM memory, and a PlayStation 2 memory card 8 megabyte storage. Playstation 2 was succeeded by PlayStation 3 platform in 2006.

 

ps3-logo-pngPlayStation 3 (or PS3) is Sony’s seven generation platform based on PlayStation 3 console. It first released on 11 November 2006, and since then it has been Sony’s flagship console till November 2013, when Sony released the next generation PS4 platform. PS3 consoles has had several upgrades, with significant changes both in design and functionality. It is based on 3.2 GHz Cell Broadband Engine with 1 PPE & 7 SPEs CPU, 256 MB memory, and 2.5-inch SATA hard drive with capacity of (20 GB, 40 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB, 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB, 320 GB or 500 GB included) (upgradeable).

 

ps4-logoPlayStation 4 (or PS4) is Sony’s eight generation platform based on PlayStation 4 console. It was released on 29 November 2013 and succeeded PlayStation 3 console. PS4 is based on 8-core AMD x86-64 CPU and 8 GB GDDR5 and 256 MB DDR3 RAM. The operating system is so called PlayStation 4 system software. PS4 platforms offers more interactive experience for players, including “share”, PlayStation Now, cloud-based gaming service of streaming video content, PlayStation App, and other.

 

PSP LogoPSP or PlayStation Portable is Sony’s handheld consoles. It was released 24 March 2005. The console is based on 333 MHz MIPS R4000 CPU, 32 MB (PSP-1000); 64 MB (2000, 3000, Go, E1000) memory, and it uses an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD) as its primary storage. Later upgrades of the format included PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 models. The last update was PSP-Go model, though later in 2011, Sony introduced a budget PSP-1000E model. PSP was succeeded by next generation handheld console, Vita.

 

PS Vita LogoPlayStation Vita is Sony’s handheld console. It was released on 22 February 2012. It has succeeded PSP format, and is  back compatible. Vita is based on 2 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM memory, PS Vita memory card (4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 GB), and PlayStation Vita system software OS. A redesigned PCH-2000 series model was released on 10/10/2013.

 

Wii LogoWii is Nintendo’s stationary platform based on Wii console. It first released on 16/11/2006, and is Nintendo’s seventh generation console. It is based on IBM PowerPC “Broadway” CPU, and 512 MB Internal flash memory SD card, SDHC card memory, and ATI “Hollywood” graphic card. It was succeeded by Wii-U platform at the end of 2012.

 

wii-u-logoWii-U is Nintendo’s eight generation console based on Wii-U console. It was released on 18 November 2012 and succeeded Wii console, and is backward compatible with Wii software. Wii-U is based on 1.24 GHz Tri-Core IBM PowerPC “Espresso” processor, 2 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz memory, and Wii U OS operating system. The Wii-U controller has an embedded touchscreen monitor.

 

x360-logoXbox 360 (or X360) is Microsoft seventh generation paltform based on Xbox 360 console. First released on 22 November 2005, it has had several upgrades and restyles, including major upgrade to slim 4Gb and 250Gb  consoles. The console is based on 3.2 GHz PowerPC Tri-Core Xenon processor, 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM clocked at 700 MHz memory and Xbox 360 operating system.

 

Xbox One LogoXbox One is Microsoft’s eight generation platform based on Xbox One console. It released on 21 November 2013, and is back compatible with Xbox 360 software. The console is based on Custom 1.75 GHz AMD 8 core APU (2 Quad-Core Jaguar modules) processor, 8 GB DDR3 memory, and Xbox OS, Windows custom kernel and a hypervisor Operating System.
